Story

Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page!

In 2001, my lovely Dad was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. He was told at the time that he “would more likely die by being hit by a bus than of this type of cancer”

In February 2006, Dad returned from his annual Majorca golfing trip in absolute agony, crawling on the floor in pain. Having been a nurse for a while, alarm bells started to ring. We attended A+E and Dad was admitted to the ward. After numerous bloods and scans, we were given the news that Dad’s cancer had spread to his spine and bones…the “being hit by a bus” analogy wasn’t quite true after all!

Radiotherapy and palliative Chemotherapy were offered. Dad seemed to be losing his fight as he grew weaker soon after his bony mets were diagnosed. However, he gained a new strength when my daughter Lily (Dad’s 10th Grandchild) was born in the April. Dad got a new lease of life from somewhere and he and Lily became inseparable 💖

A short break of treatment in December 2006 ensured Dad could give me away at mine and Andy’s wedding feeling as well as he could. He was tired and after his wedding speech, he headed to bed but not before he said goodbye to every single guest at our wedding - I think he knew that he wouldn’t be seeing some of our wedding guests again.

After a few months of plodding on, in late June 2007, Dad suddenly took a turn for the worse. After a short hospital stay, we managed to get him home. 2 days after this, he deteriorated further and, after a precious time of dear friends and family visiting to say goodbye, we had the most beautiful time at his bedside. Dad, his partner Shirley, his daughters, son in laws and grandchildren were all together before Dad took his final breath. Dad was as dignified in death as he was in life. Our hero left us on the 3rd July 2007. He really was the best Dad a girl could ask for.

Running 50 miles in October might seem a piece of cake to most people but I detest running! When I think back to what dad had to deal with though, it’s the least I can do to raise money for this worthwhile cause in memory of my amazing Dad 💙

Prostate Cancer Research is dedicated to creating brand new prostate cancer treatments. Prostate cancer is now the most diagnosed cancer in the UK and 11,500 men die from the disease every year. People affected by prostate cancer need breakthrough treatments, and research is the only way to turn this hope into reality.

Their vision is clear; a world where people are free from the impact of prostate cancer. I’m part of #TeamPCR because I share this vision. Will you help me support their research?
