At 1st Chorleywood Scouts, we give young people from age 6 to 18 the opportunity to build confidence, skills and resilience through experiences in a safe and friendly environment, helping them to grow into the person they want to be. We have a large building as HQ that needs extensive modernisation.

Story

Chorleywood Scouts has a fantastic HQ building, which was built in the late 1940's and further extended in the 1970, allowing us to support thousands of young people in the village over the 77 years since scouting first started in Chorleywood.

Recent surveys have found that we have Asbestos Fibre Board in the building, which needs to be removed, and also have extensive wiring and upgrades to fire protection are required. The upshot of this is that as of September 2024 our HQ was closed to us whilst Asbestos is removed, and we are unable to use the building this term whilst wiring and remedial works are carried out.

We have developed a three stage project plan - Stage 1 is complete, which was to safely remove the Asbestos, and gain entry back to HQ so we can use the lower hall with mitigations in place. We can't use any other spaces as we have no fire protection and inadequate fire exits now the Asbestos has been stripped out. This has cost around £24,000

Stage 2 is to partially rewire and put ceilings back in so we can use the upper hall. This will cost over £40,000

Stage 3 is a 'build back better' - this is the massive part of the project and we are submitting grants to enable us to raise around £300,000 for this. This phase will see improved fire exits, toilets kitchen, disabled access and more. Essentially this brings the building to the current standards needed of a public access building.

Please do give as much as you are able to help secure the future of scouting in Chorleywood.

We help young people develop life skills and make a positive contribution to society. Scouts participate in a variety of activities, including learning new skills, making new friends working in teams and learning leadership skills. Our scouts go on adventures, including camping, hiking, abseiling, cycling, and canoeing. Scouts can take on new challenges and learn by doing. Scouts are open to all genders, races, and backgrounds, regardless of physical ability
