In July, I turn 40 and will be running the Mt. Rainier Half Marathon -- a slightly cliché attempt to prove something to myself. What that is, I’m still not entirely sure. But in an effort to make this about more than just me, I’ve decided to use the race to raise funds for a local organization doing deeply important work.
I’m fundraising for Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island, a Providence-based nonprofit whose vision is simple and powerful: a world where everyone is welcome and has the opportunity to thrive. As the daughter of immigrants, the rights, dignity, and sense of belonging of immigrants have always been important to me. I’ve referred several families to Dorcas International over the years and have seen firsthand how meaningful and urgently needed their support is.
Many of us are feeling shaken by what’s happening right now across the country, including most devastatingly in Minneapolis. At a moment when immigrant communities are feeling increasingly unsafe and scared, organizations like Dorcas are helping families stay housed, access healthcare and legal support, and feel less alone.
Dorcas provides practical, on-the-ground support: adult education and English classes, job training, citizenship and immigration legal services, refugee resettlement, translation and interpretation, and basic necessities like clothing and household items. Dorcas International’s services are needed more than ever, yet they have faced significant cuts to their federal funding. That means every dollar raised right now has real impact, helping ensure families can continue to access the support they need during an especially difficult moment.
If you’re feeling the pull to do something to support immigrants' rights, dignity, and basic humanity, this is one tangible way to help. I’m extremely grateful for your support and know that your donation will truly make a difference in someone’s life.
