1400m Swim

Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses – who we continually support and develop – provide life-changing care for families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hello, my name is Harriet and my Grandma (Bow-wa) has Alzheimers. I am going to swim 1400m (56 lengths) of Morpeth Swimming Pool to raise money towards Dementia UK which funds the Admiral Nurses who are helping me and my Mummy. I have chosen to swim 1400m as it costs on average £1400 a week to fund to a placement in a care home for someone with Dementia.

I feel sad as I used to go to her house for sleepovers. She also did the best pasta and mince and dumplings ever. She used to take me shopping, pick me up from school, give me peanuts and lemonade.

She used to come on holiday with us and I liked that a lot. We used to watch the Thundermans together and now I can't watch them at house as she doesn't live there anymore.

We did lots of baking together and my favourite thing was gingerbread cookies and decorate them with sweets and icing. I took them into school in my packed lunch and also won the baking competition with them.

I am sad she no longer lives at home. I will miss those happy memories.

The Admiral nurses have helped my Mummy from her stay in hospital and following her discharge to support my Bow-wa moving into her new home and helping to navigate all the different things that are happening.

One in 6 people over the age of 80 have Alzheimers. in 2026 there are 437 Admiral Nurses working in the UK to support families like ours. Their support is free to families and all the money to fund them comes from things like fundraising, donations etc.

I would appreciate any money that you have to help this important charity. And if you can come and cheer me on that would be amazing!
