This year I’m running the marathon for a reason very close to my heart.

On 1st August, my husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer. In that moment, life completely halted. Holidays were cancelled and everything suddenly became about appointments, scans, and planning for surgery followed by chemotherapy.

Thanks to the incredible care he has received he is now all clear — something we will never take for granted.

Cancer has already taken so much from our family. I lost my mum in 2020, and for a long time afterwards I couldn’t face running more than 5k on my own. It felt too hard, emotionally to be with my thoughts. But now I finally feel ready to face this disease in a different way, and many of my long training runs have been done solo — something I never thought I’d be able to do again.

I’m running this marathon to give something back and to help fund the research that saves lives and gives families hope when they need it most. Bright Cancer Care relies on donations to fund studies that improve patient outcomes, often working alongside the medical teams at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford. 

Every mile I run carries a little piece of my mum with me, and a huge amount of gratitude for the care that got my husband through.
