Sassy's fundraiser for UK Sepsis Trust

Sassy Sapphire is raising money for UK Sepsis Trust

Charity Stream on the 12th & Fundraising all month · 12 September 2025

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.

Story

💜In August 2019, I got sepsis in my left leg. I knew the symptoms and took myself to the hospital despite the failures by other medical professionals to spot sepsis. When I got there, my infection level was beyond fatal levels. I spent the next eight days in the hospital fighting for my life. I had months of recovery and had to learn to walk again, but it left me disabled with permanent mobility issues in my left leg.

Since then, I have had sepsis many more times, but because I was sepsis savvy, I was able to seek treatment before it became life-threatening.

The pictures below show the sepsis in my leg in Aug 2019. There is a 12-hour difference between the picture on the left and on the right. THAT is how fast sepsis can develop.

✨The UK Sepsis Trust support groups were a valuable tool in my recovery. They run support groups for people bereaved by sepsis. They help people with long Covid, as the effects of long Covid are similar to sepsis recovery. I now volunteer for them and share my sepsis story, giving talks with schools and businesses.

✨Sepsis causes eleven million deaths globally each year. It is a life-threatening condition that can lead to shock, multiple organ failure, and death if not caught and treated quickly. In the UK there are five deaths per hour due to sepsis, that's forty-eight thousand deaths each year. Knowing the symptoms of sepsis can not only save your life one day, but it may also save the life of someone you love.

🎯Please help me achieve my fundraising goal so they can keep supporting people in recovery and spread awareness. Every amount will make an impact on someone's life.
