Restoration of Singkil Swamp Wildlife Reserve, Sumatra, Indonesia
The Singkil swamp has the highest estimated Orangutan density of any population in Sumatra.
It is one of the highest priority conservation landscapes in northern Sumatra, providing critical habitat for endangered Sumatran elephants, rhinos and tigers, as well as Orangutans.
It is also part of the Leuser Ecosystem and lies in the buffer zone of the Gunung Leuser National Park and the UNESCO Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra World Heritage Site.
Agricultural developments and the construction of roads have led to large areas of Singkil becoming degraded.
So far SOS has supported their frontline partners in Sumatra to reclaim 500 hectares of land within the reserve that had previously been encroached by a palm oil company, which carved canals into the peat to drain the soil in preparation for cultivation.
Please support our campaign so that Sumatran orangutans have more space ton thrive in resilient forests."
