Street Child Cycle Challenge is raising money for Street Action

Street Child Cycle Challenge 2025 · 5 September 2025

Street Action is a UK charity that partners with local agencies in Africa who work directly with street children, particularly those run by former street children. We raise support, build connections and advocate around the issues regarding street children.

Story

In 2010, when we started using our love of cycling as a way to raise awareness and money for street-connected young people in Burundi, many of us were in our thirties (with a few outliers!).

Fifteen years later, we go again. Our bodies a little less willing. Our numbers down to nine this year. But still pedalling hard to raise money for New Generation and the work they do to support street-connected children in the second poorest country in the world.

Over the years we have raised over £120,000 through Street Action, their UK partner – money for a car, a coffee machine, a cafe, a house and some land (which is now their permanent home).

Dieudonne, a former street-child himself and founder of New Generation says,

“It’s not the amount of money you raise that matters, what's important is that you do this year after year and are telling people about the work we do.”

But clearly the money helps!

So this year we’re cycling through East Anglia (which is not as flat as you may think!), over four days, to raise money for New Generation.

Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world, and things have been getting harder in recent months with virtually no fuel in the country and inflation running as high as 45%.

In this context, any money you can give helps pay for food and medical care for 143 street-connected young people in Bujumbura (the capital of Burundi). Helps pay for school uniforms, materials and fees for 92 of the youngest children. Helps pay the rent for two houses in Bujumbura for some of the most vulnerable young people. Helps support outreach work to another 150 children. And helps New Generation grow food for the children in their care.

Anything you can give would be massively appreciated.

Thanks

As a bit of background:

Street Action was founded in 2006 as a small response to the global urban phenomenon of street-connected children; children who find themselves living on the streets of cities around the world.

Street Action believes that no child should have to live on the streets and is a UK charity that partners with local agencies in Africa working directly with street children. It is inspired and motivated by the voice and pioneering strategies of its African partners. We work with organisations where former street children play meaningful roles in both day-to-day activities, strategy development and advocacy.

For the last ten years we have worked exclusively with New Generation, a pioneering project in Burundi. New Generation believe children and young people are the future and hope of Burundi. It is a pioneering, nation-building programme, mentoring leaders of integrity for the future Burundi, with street-connected children as its focus.
