In 2010, when we started using our love of cycling as a way to raise awareness and money for street-connected young people in Burundi, many of us were in our thirties (with a few outliers!).
Sixteen years (and thirteen rides) later, we go again. Our bodies a little less willing. But still pedalling hard to raise money for New Generation and the work they do to support street-connected children in the second poorest country in the world.
Over the years we have raised over £150,000 through Street Action, their UK partner – money for a car, a coffee machine, a cafe, a house and some land (which is now their permanent home).
Dieudonne, a former street-child himself and founder of New Generation says,
“It’s not the amount of money you raise that matters, what's important is that you do this year after year and are telling people about the work we do.”
But clearly the money helps!
So this year we’re cycling from Lille to Paris, over four days, to raise money for New Generation.
Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world, and things have been getting harder in the last couple of years with virtually no fuel in the country and inflation running as high as 45%.
In this context, any money you can give helps pay for food, education and medical care for 143 street-connected young people in Bujumbura (the capital of Burundi). The money raised this year will help pay for school uniforms, materials and fees for 92 of the youngest children. And help pay the rent for two houses in Bujumbura for some of the most vulnerable young people.
