Story
In January 2026, our entire team at Spencer Civil Engineering, Spencer Structures and Spencer Plant Hire are taking on the 8,000 Steps-Per-Day Challenge to raise money for Mates in Mind – the Construction Mental Health charity.
Mental ill-health is a major challenge in our industry.
Recent reports show that:
97% of construction workers have felt stressed in the last year
87% have experienced anxiety
70% have experienced depression
Suicide rates in construction are 3.7 times higher than the national average
These numbers are unacceptable, and they highlight how important mental health support is within construction.
Throughout January, our team will each commit to walking 8,000 steps per day for 31 days – a total of 248,000 steps each – to raise awareness and funds for a charity that directly supports workers, families, and organisations across the industry.
We ask for a minimum donation of £25 to take part, but any contributions help, and also feel free to be as generous as you wish! To increase the impact, Spencer Civil Engineering will double the total amount raised.
This challenge is meant to be positive, flexible, and supportive, not stressful. The aim is simply to encourage a bit more daily movement through the month of January, raise awareness around mental health in construction, and support a charity that is doing vital work in our industry.
If you miss a day or fall short on steps, that’s absolutely fine.
You can make steps up on another day, or just do your best. There is no penalty, no judgement, and no pressure to be perfect
To keep everyone motivated, we’ll be running a weekly leaderboard showing everyone’s step totals. This isn’t about who walks the most, it’s just a fun way to keep the challenge engaging and support each other throughout the month.
We’ll also have a dedicated WhatsApp group where participants can share their progress, daily motivation, walking photos, and weekly screenshots of their steps. It will be a positive space for encouragement, updates, and a bit of friendly competition between teams, sites, and departments.
Every donation, large or small, makes a real difference.
Thank you for supporting this cause.
The Spencer Civil Engineering Team!
