Story
I am Scott Wiggans. I am running from the bottom of Great Britain (lands end) to the top (John o groats.. known as LEJOG) . It is 854 miles. This works out at around just over 50 miles a day for 17 days.
On September 3rd 2023, my daughter gave birth at 22 weeks to a still born with a serious case of spina bifida.
Spina bifida is when a baby's spine and spinal cord does not develop properly in the womb, causing a gap in the spine that fills with fluid. Often, abnormalities of the brain accompany abnormalities of the spine because the neural tube closes first in the middle and then closure proceeds both upward and downward, meaning that if something happens that prevents formation of the spine, it may also prevent formation of the part of the brain that is forming (closing) at the same time therefore leading to intellectual and physical disabilities. An infant born with spinal bifida may have nerve damage below the affected area of the spinal cord. Some will have learning disabilities or intellectual disabilities. Spina bifida is a type of neural tube defect and causes long life problems.
I have a target of £5,000 to raise before my run.
So please dig deep and let’s create money for spinal research so we can get to the bottom of this condition and help those babies who may have it in the future…
Thankyou,
Scott.
Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity funding medical research around the world to develop effective treatments for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury. Every year 4,400 people in the UK suffer a spinal cord injury.
We receive no government funding and rely entirely on the support of the public to raise funds for our research. Because of the efforts of our supporters, we have funded innovative medical research that has achieved a number of ground breaking changes in the field.
