Story
The Challenge:
On 5th September a team of blind veterans will set off from Eastbourne to cover the challenging terrain of the South Downs, completing hikes of 57km or 100km - an activity they all agree would have seemed impossible when they first began to loose their sight.
The team will set off together from Eastbourne tackling a route which includes a climb of 660m along the coastline, over the Severn Sisters and through Cuckmere Haven before reaching Alfriston. From there they will continue to complete their chosen distances.
57k - Eastbourne to Hove
Blind veterans Jeff, Karl, Rob and Steve will continue on to Hove with an additional climb of 590m as they navigate the remainder of the South Downs Way before a final descent into Hove via Brighton promenade.
100k – Eastbourne to Arundel
Blind veterans Andy, Jerry and Stu are determined to complete the full 100k – continuing from Hove towards Devil's Dyke and onto Beachy Head, navigating terrain made all the more tricker by what by then will be night time light levels, before arriving at the 100k finish line in Arundel.
Why they’re taking on the challenge:
Sight loss can be devastating. For many blind veterans it results in a loss of confidence, independence, a negative impact on physical and mental well-being. Completing simple everyday tasks can become impossible and taking part in activities that gave a sense of purpose – such as work, cooking or sport - can seem unrealistic.
Although each team member has their own personal reasons for taking on this challenge, they all share one motivating factor – the experience of sight loss and the impact of the support of Blind Veterans UK. Their stories highlight how, with the provision rehabilitation, training , equipment and support – Blind Veterans UK can help veterans rebuild their lives after sight loss.
How you can support the team:
As well as reaching the finishing line, the team are hoping that completion of their challenge will help raise awareness of the support provided by Blind Veterans UK and the impact it has – and continues to have – on blind veterans like themselves. They also want to ensure other veterans can benefit from the charity’s support including experiences such as Rehab Weeks and participation in events such as this.
Make a donation: The team are hoping to raise a minimum of £500 – the equivalent of the average cost of a veteran attending a Rustington Centre Rehab or Training Week – they would love to raise more!
