ABP Southampton Marathon 2024 · 7 April 2024 ·

Safer Waves supports merchant seafarers who have experienced sexual violence or gender discrimination while working at sea.

Story

On the 7th April 2024 I will be Running the Southampton Half Marathon and will be joined by Harriet! Who, like me, is a Maritime London Deck cadet at Warsash. We will be raising money for the seafarers charity Safer Waves! So, all donations are greatly appreciated!

Safer Waves is run by volunteers and is a registered charity. Safer Waves was set up in 2019 to provide support to merchant seafarers who have experienced sexual assault, sexual harassment or gender discrimination onboard.

These experiences can be hard to talk about, even within the supportive environment provided by existing seafarer welfare and support organizations. While we have made progress in discussing bullying and harassment within the Merchant Navy, it remains difficult to find a safe space to talk about assault and rape. Safer Waves aim to create that safe space by providing information and emotional support to seafarers. When appropriate we signpost to other suitable welfare charities globally and locally. We are working with seafarers, employers and organizations to build a network of support.

In the future I hope to make this an annual event, where people can come together and run the 5k, 10k, Half-Marathon and Full Marathon while raising money for an incredible seafaring charity!
