Story
June 2013, Shane’s son Rory was diagnosed with cancer, aged two and a half— a moment that changed his family’s world. During their hardest days, Young Lives vs Cancer stood by them, offering vital support, strength, and guidance. Now, a few years on, Shane wants to give back to the charity that helped his family when they needed it most.
To honour that journey, he’s calling on his colleagues in the Fire Service, along with friends and family, to join him in running the Derry Walled City 10 Miler.
Shane and Rory are lacing up their trainers and taking on the 10 miles side by side and they’re running every step in support of Young Lives vs Cancer. For them, this run isn’t just a challenge — it’s a celebration of resilience, of how far they’ve come, and of the support that helped carry them through.
Their goal is to help ensure more children facing cancer — and their families — receive the same lifeline of support that meant so much to them.
When a child is diagnosed with cancer life becomes full of fear, for them and their family. Fear of treatment, but also of families being torn apart, overwhelming money worries, of having nowhere to turn, no one to talk to.
At Young Lives vs Cancer, we help families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. But every day 12 more children and young people hear the devastating news they have cancer. We’ll face it all together – but we can’t do it without you.
