Welcome to the University of Limerick climbs Kilimanjaro campaign! These incredible students are taking on the challenge of a lifetime all whilst helping in the fight against meningitis and septicaemia.

Story

Hi, my name is Shane and I'm a fourth year mechanical engineering student from the University of Limerick. Next August I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, to raise money for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

The Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) are at the heart of the initiative that is working with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and leading experts on the disease to tackle meningitis globally. Their intrepid volunteers are taking on this incredible challenge and raising money to help them defeat meningitis and septicaemia by 2030.

Meningitis is an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord and can be caused by several species of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Babies and young adults are the two age groups most affected by meningitis in Ireland. 1 in every 20 cases result in death and 1 in 10 people who recover will have a major disability such as deafness, brain damage or loss of limbs.

The Meningitis Research Foundation funds vital research into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia. It also provides support to families affected by the disease, survivors and helps to spread awareness. All of the money raised will go towards supporting this great cause.

I am aiming to raise €5,895, €1 for every metre of Kilimanjaro above sea-level!

All donations are greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for visiting my page!

Thanks a mil!

Shane.
