Shanleigh and Tarryn's fundraiser for Asante Africa Foundation Inc

Shanleigh Oades is raising money for Asante Africa Foundation Inc

Mount Everest 2025 · 6 October 2025

Story

October 2023, we stood as two South Africans, together on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (Uhuru) — exhausted, exhilarated, and in awe of the continent that has given us so much. That climb was humbling, a test of resilience and spirit. But it also lit a fire in us — a deeper drive to give back meaningfully to the place that shaped so much of who we are.

This October, we’re taking on a new challenge: trekking over 65 km through the Himalayas to reach Everest Base Camp at 5,364m (17,598ft). It's a big personal goal — but this time, the climb is about something much bigger than the mountain.

We're using this journey to raise $10,000 for the Asante Africa Foundation, a cause incredibly close to our hearts.

Asante Africa Foundation doesn’t just believe in the power of education — they act on it every single day, creating real, measurable change in communities across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. They equip young people — especially girls and young women — with the knowledge, life skills, and leadership training they need to break cycles of poverty and build the futures they deserve.

We’ve seen firsthand what opportunity can unlock. We’ve seen how a single chance — to stay in school, to learn a trade, to gain confidence — can transform a child’s entire trajectory. And when that transformation happens, it doesn’t stop at one person. It ripples outward — to families, villages, economies.

That’s what Asante Africa is doing. They’re not just educating; they’re empowering a generation of changemakers from within — youth who are becoming the teachers, entrepreneurs, advocates, and leaders of tomorrow.

This mission speaks to everything we believe in: dignity, possibility, and the power of investing in people. It’s why this climb matters so much to us — and why your support would mean the world.

If you feel moved to contribute — no matter the amount — you’ll be helping open the door to a better future for these young leaders.

We’d also love it if you could share our fundraiser with anyone in your circle who might want to be part of this impact. And if you’re curious about the trek, the foundation, or just want to follow along, we’ll be posting updates before and during the journey.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you — for believing in what’s possible, and for standing with us as we climb for something so much bigger than ourselves.

With gratitude,

Tarryn and Shan

Luckily, we've been training (read: sweating) under the watchful eyes of Johno, Juls, and the amazing team at The Daily J, who are making sure we’re as ready as possible — mentally, physically, and possibly emotionally!
