Story

Hi, I'm taking part in The Myton Hospices Walk for Myton to help raise £45,000! Please sponsor me! I am walking 13.1 miles, a half marathon.

About Mom:

Mom was so full of life, going out, dancing, have a sing song, even still doing water aerobics at the local pool and she doted on her two granddaughters. Yes she was 81, but a very young 81, with plenty of energy. She gave her love generously and was the strength behind so happy moments in our family.

Unfortunately, in April/May 2024, our beloved mom was diagnosed with lung cancer — a diagnosis that came as a huge shock to our family. I felt our world came crashing down.

She underwent two courses of chemotherapy, but unfortunately, the treatment was too invasive for her. She also received several sessions of radiotherapy to help manage the pain she was experiencing.

In July/August 2024, mom was admitted to Myton Hospice for pain management. Whilst we were receiving palliative care at home, the staff at Myton were able to offer the kind of specialist support that made a real difference to her comfort and well-being. Their care was exceptional, and we’ll never forget the way they looked after her.

We did everything we could over the following months. After seeing our oncologist in October 2024, we were told that mom had months rather than years left. As a family, we decided to focus on the moments that mattered — planning birthdays, Christmas, New Year, and especially my brother’s wedding in November.

Sadly, just a few weeks before the wedding, mom was admitted to Warwick Hospital due to difficulty breathing, low oxygen levels, and an infection. She spent 17 days there. In a touching moment, the hospital chaplain arranged for a private ceremony in the chapel following the legal marriage at Solihull Registry Office — allowing mom to be a part of the special day. We’re forever grateful for that.

Mom returned home a week later, and we celebrated both the wedding and her homecoming with a family lunch. She made it through Christmas and New Year, and we were so thankful to have those moments together. In February 2025, she celebrated both her 81st birthday and my brother's 50th — milestones that meant the world to her and to us, and of course Mother's Day.

Mom always took pride in her appearance, and on 15 March she finally felt strong enough to visit her regular hairdresser — a small but deeply meaningful step. She looked beautiful and felt wonderful afterwards, even booking a perm for the following Friday. Sadly, just a few days later, she began to experience intense pain in her leg. We thought it might be a pulled muscle, but after a doctor’s visit, she was admitted once again to Warwick Hospital. It turned out that the cancer had spread, which we already knew, but this time it had caused several fractures in her hip. She never did get that perm.

She spent a week in Warwick before being transferred back to Myton Hospice on 27 March 2025. There, she received compassionate, attentive care from nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, and volunteers. While her pain never fully disappeared, she was as comfortable and supported as possible.

After six weeks at Myton, our beautiful mom passed away peacefully on Friday, 9 May 2025.

As a family, we cannot fully express how grateful we are to everyone at Myton Hospice in Warwick. Despite everything, the atmosphere was never heavy with sadness — the staff were warm, kind, and brought light into our darkest days. Their dedication made all the difference, and they supported us in ways we will never forget.

To us, they are true unsung heroes — and they deserve all the recognition and support we can offer.

If I can raise funds in honour of this incredible team and the care they provide, then I am truly grateful for your donation. Your support means everything.

Let’s do this in the loving memory of a wife, mom, sister and grandmother – and for all the families Myton supports every day.

With heartfelt thanks,

John, Sharon & Mark Purser
