My Story
Last summer, I was diagnosed out of the blue with breast cancer. The past few months have been very tough — first with medication to shrink the cancer before surgery, then surgery itself, and then more medication followed by radiotherapy.
I’m through the main medical treatment now, but I’ll be on preventative cancer medicines for another five years… and to be completely honest, those medicines are worse than the surgery ever was!
When you’re actually sitting in wards, going through treatment, you suddenly see just how many people are facing cancer too. The sad reality is that 1 in 2 of us will now get cancer, and so many people need the support that charities like Friends of ANCHOR provide every single day.
Why I'm Fundraising
Facing cancer head‑on made me realise that life is far too short. I promised myself I would start saying “yes” to more things and push myself outside my comfort zone.
So… I applied to be a catwalk model for the annual Friends of ANCHOR – Courage on the Catwalk, where every model has a cancer or haematology diagnosis. Last year’s shows raised nearly £400,000, with every penny going directly to supporting cancer patients.
And — I was successful!
I said YES… and now I’ll be walking down a runway, completely out of my comfort zone, in front of more than 2,000 people on 16th and 17th May.
I'll be working hard with weekly practices, fittings and make up. Previous models say the experience is transformational, uplifting, and life‑affirming — and that you make friends for life. I can already see why.
Why Friends of ANCHOR Matters
Throughout my cancer journey, I’ve been supported not only by my family and friends, but also by the amazing team at Friends of ANCHOR, who provide comfort, care and vital support to people going through cancer treatment and beyond here in the North of Scotland, working out of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
They continue to support me now as I recover — and I want to give something back so they can keep helping others when they need it most.
How You Can Help
If you can spare even a few pennies or pounds to cheer me on and support Friends of ANCHOR, I would be so grateful.
Every donation, big or small, helps cancer patients right here in our community.
And if you're a UK taxpayer, please remember to Gift Aid your donation — it makes a huge difference at no extra cost to you.
Thank you so much for reading my story and for supporting this incredible charity.
Your kindness truly means the world
Sharon xx
