Story

MG Midget Restoration in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society

In October 2024 myself (Shaun) and my friend Brian (Wobbly) were informed of a 1962 MG Midget that had been owned by a gentleman since its purchase in that year.

We contacted the family and arranged to look at the car.

It was taken off the road in 2011 to undergo a full restoration. The garage was full of car parts piled high - a number of engines, gearboxes and many bags and boxes of new parts.

We chatted to the family, who said that their husband/dad had started the restoration but was unable to complete it as he had been diagnosed with dementia and had to go and live in a care home. This was very sad to hear, he loved the MG and wanted to bring it back to its former glory.

After some serious thought we decided to go ahead and take the project on.

All the parts were loaded into my car and transported to my garage. The family also contributed files of receipts and information including many workshop and restoration manuals.

We decided that we would finish the restoration and set up a raffle for someone to win the car, with all profits going to Alzheimer’s Society. This charity and the effects of this cruel illness are close to my heart as I lost my mum to Dementia in 2020.

Donations made here go direct to the charity. We are funding the build.

The family were overjoyed at hearing this, we said that we would restore the MG and take their husband/dad out for a drive in it. He has asked his wife “How is my little MG getting on?“

My partner in this project, Wobbly has been a mechanic for over 60 years has been checking over the little 950cc engine that will be going back into the MG. We discovered that he carried out an MoT on the MG in 1985. Spooky!

All welding has been carried out on the car and it is a great, rust free solid example.

The car will be on the MG Owners club stand at the Classic Car Show in November 2025 at the NEC

We hope it will be finished by then and the raffle will be drawn there.

At Alzheimer’s Society, we vow to help end the devastation caused by dementia, through dedicated support and research into life-changing treatments. But we can’t do it without you.
