Katy's fundraiser for St Mary's Hospice

Shelly Tyson is raising money for St Mary's Hospice
In memory of Katy Galbraith
St Mary’s Hospice provides specialised supportive and palliative care for people with life-shortening conditions throughout South Cumbria. Only 18% of our funding comes from the NHS, the rest comes from our supporters. All our services are provided free to patients and their families.

Story

Katy’s life was greatly enhanced by many charities over the years for which we will always be grateful. We would like to continue to support some of these in Katy’s name. Katy was supported for many years by Derian House Children’s Hospice. Derian very much supported us as a family and provided us with some very special memories. When Katy reached 26 and the end of Derian’s service provision they helped us transition to the services of St Mary’s Hospice here in Ulverston. At that time the Compassionate Community Hub was in it’s infancy. We have already watched it grow into the wonderful wide-ranging service it is. As part of Katy’s legacy, we would like to contribute to developing the part of this service which will specifically provide young adults living with life-shortening conditions with tailored support within their own community.

Leaving the support of professionals and organisations you have been supported by, for often a lifetime, can be an extremely traumatic time for many young adults and their families as they transition to adult services. We want to make sure that young adults with life-shortening conditions in our area have the support and ongoing access to the services that they need.

Access to social activities is a huge part of this. Katy greatly enjoyed her time at all of the Living Well groups she was part of. In addition to Living Well Katy was also an active member of YouthAbility in Barrow. Katy accessed many social activities through this wonderful organisation. Youth Clubs, the SignAbility Choir and StitchAbility, of which she was a founding member.

All of these things helped enrich Katy’s life beyond measure. It would be wonderful if, in Katy’s memory, you could contribute to maintaining and developing these services, so they remain for other young adults who need them.
