Story
On July 5, 2025 we will be taking on Scotland's Toughest Trekathon The Great Glencoe Challenge. This involves trekking 26.2 miles through the most dramatic scenery that Scotland has to offer from the heart of Glencoe to the foot of Ben Nevis. The terrain is very steep and challenging and takes in the infamous Devils Staircase. Throw in some mud, midges and the unpredictable July weather in the Highlands and a 12 hour curfew this challenge is not for the faint hearted.
Team Shomelanoma is Shiona, Dave, Tony, Sam, Phil, Will, Jen, Lynn, Jan, Derek, Kevin, Liz, Johnny, Paula, Anthony, Deirdre, Tamara, Jacqueline, Kirsteen, Moray, Catriona and Calum
Fun loving adventurer, Shiona Ramage was 45 years old when she was first diagnosed with melanoma in June 2016. Since then she has been receiving treatment at The Royal Marsden for advanced melanoma. In 2017 the melanoma advanced to her brain and progressed to stage 4 for which there is no cure. Fortunately in the last 10 years new immunotherapy and targeted treatments have helped extend the lives of patients like Shiona. However immunotherapy only works for 50% of patients and melanoma often develops resistance to the targeted treatments and too many patients are still dying of the disease.
Shiona has been fortunate to be treated by the wonderful Professor James Larkin and the team at The Royal Marsden. She is currently taking targeted treatment Debrafenib and Trametinib which is currently controlling her melanoma. She writes a blog to raise awareness of living with stage 4 melanoma and you can read her story here www.shomelanoma.com
We are fundraising for melanoma research at the Royal Marsden. All funds raised from the challenge will go 100% towards the melanoma research fund at the Royal Marsden to help them continue develop life saving research and discover new innovative cancer treatments to extend the lives of more cancer patients. The case Shiona receives is exceptional and she wants to give back to the hospital she owes so much and make a difference to extend the lives of other cancer patients.
Thank you for all of your support
