College House is going all out to support Henry and Ben (oceanoarsmen.com) as they seek to raise £50,000 for the Alexander Devine Children's Hospice.
Leaving at the end of this month, they will be rowing from the Canaries to Antigua, covering 3000 miles of the Atlantic Ocean, battling 20ft waves and strong ocean currents, as well as living and sleeping on a rowing boat built for two for three months!
On Friday 28 November, starting at 1.30pm, we, in College House, are going on a 24 hour row-a-thon, seeking to virtually cover the 346 km of the River Thames, from the source to the sea. Using an ergo in 20 minute sessions, each rower will try to cover about 5km in their allotted time, and we will try to keep the ergo in constant motion for 24 hours!
The magnitude of their task and what they have pledged to achieve is extraordinary, and was even the subject of a parliamentary Early Day Motion:
That this House commends Ben and Harry, known as the Ocean Oarsmen, for their extraordinary commitment in undertaking the challenge of rowing across the Atlantic Ocean to raise £50,000 for the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice, a cause that provides essential support to children with life-limiting conditions and their families; recognises the physical and mental endurance required for such a formidable journey of 3,000 miles; and wishes them every success in their endeavour, celebrating their efforts to bring attention to and support for this vital charity.

Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service is a charity that provides specialist care and vital support to babies, children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, and their families, across Berkshire and into surrounding counties.
We currently support over 200 children and their families, but we are committed to growing our service and reaching out to every child and their family that needs us.
