Shirley's fundraiser for The Open Door (Taunton)

Shirley Nation is raising money for The Open Door (Taunton)

South West Coast 50 Ultra Challenge 2026 · 25 July 2026 · Start fundraising for this event

The Open Door (Taunton) is set up to meet the immediate needs of rough sleepers in Taunton. In the first instance we provide a warm welcome, a smile and a cuppa. We fill a vital gap in service provision within the town and provide two hot meals a day; breakfast and lunch; five days a week which may be the only hot healthy meals that rough sleepers have access to. We provide access to a clothing store and a laundry facility as well as hot showers so people can meet their personal hygiene needs. In addition to meeting the immediate subsistence needs of the rough sleepers, The Open Door provides essential tailored support for individuals, aimed at improving well-being and securing accommodation. We work in partnership with other local partners providing a base and acting as a hub for access to Somerset Council Housing Department; Somerset Drug and Alcohol Service; the Somerset Homeless and Rough Sleeper Nursing Service; Somerset Rough Sleeper Initiative Team; and MIND. Our work is underpinned by a team of three part-time staff; a team of 30 volunteers and 6 volunteer Trustees. We have an acute understanding of the needs of rough sleepers and have been providing services from our support centre in Taunton since 2007. Our work relies upon our dedicated volunteers who provide a friendly consistent face to our clients at a vulnerable time when some stability of contact with familiar people is greatly valued.

Story

I’m fundraising to support rough sleepers in Taunton by taking part in the SW Coast 50 Ultra Challenge on Saturday 25th July 2026. I will be walking 25km in Exmoor National Park along the coast from Dunster Castle via Minehead and Dunkery Beacon and back to Dunster Castle.

The Open Door (Taunton) is a warm and welcoming support centre providing aid and comfort to over 200 people a year. Donations will contribute to cooked meals, hot showers, toiletries, clean clothes and much more to facilitate the health and wellbeing of those who find themselves on hard times and rough sleeping.
