Story
In support of the 2025 Free to Run Ambassadors campaign, I am embarking on a personal challenge to participate in the Half Marathon des Sables in Cappadocia, Turkey. This event, scheduled for 21-28 June 2025, holds great significance as it symbolizes resilience and empowerment for women facing disenfranchisement and constant threats of violence.
The ultramarathon's unforgiving desert terrain presents a true test of human strength and determination, with participants covering distances of 100km or 120km through challenging sand dunes and rocky surfaces over several days. The self-sufficiency requirement, where participants must carry their own supplies including food, adds an extra layer of difficulty to this remarkable feat.
Free to Run's mission to advance gender equity globally through running in conflict areas resonates deeply with me. The simple act of exercising, especially running in public, is considered revolutionary for Afghan or Iraki women.
Personally, I cannot imagine a life without outdoor activities and sports; they boost my confidence and self-worth. I feel incredibly fortunate to have the freedom to run, hike, and enjoy the outdoors unhindered. I very much look forward to running this race for Free to Run.
