12 Month Fundraiser of different events - runs, walks, golf day, Bootcamp · 31 December 2024

Our aim is to fight and, hopefully cure brain cancer in all its forms by funding dedicated research into the use of advanced translational imaging technologies and surgical techniques, in combination with therapeutic treatments.

Story

In August 2023 our lovely Dad, Mike Shurmer, was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma brain tumour.

Dad has received the best treatment and care from all the staff and surgeons at GWH, Oxford & The Wellington Hospital.

He sailed through an awake craniotomy and the surgeons managed to remove all of the tumour 🙌🏼 he’s now going through the next course of treatment, with radiotherapy & chemotherapy cycles.

We’re all so proud of him and how he has handled each step of this journey so far! 💕

The Brainstorm Charity is a charity very close to our journey with this disease. Brainstorm’s aim is to fight and, hopefully cure brain cancer in all its forms by funding dedicated research into the use of advanced translational imaging technologies and surgical techniques, in combination with therapeutic treatments. All money donated to Brainstorm is channeled directly into their research efforts.

Too many people are being faced with this devastating diagnosis each year - every two hours, someone is diagnosed with a brain tumour in England.

In the UK, 16,000 people each year are diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Only 12% of brain tumour patients survive beyond five years of their diagnosis, whereas over 70% of breast cancer and over 40% of leukaemia patients survive beyond five years.

Brain tumour research represents just 1.37% of national spend on cancer. At the current rate of spending, it could take 100 years for brain cancer to catch up with developments in other diseases and find a cure!

Dad has been so fortunate with the treatment he has received so far, it’s been life saving! For this reason and the facts stated above, we would love to give something back and to help continue fighting this disease! 🧠

My brothers and all have different strengths, likes and interests but we’re all willing to test ourselves to fundraise for such a good cause and for our amazing Dad ❤️ this is where the 12 month fundraiser idea has come from. A different event each month, that covers all our likes (and dislikes 😉). This will range from long walks, mountain climbs, a half marathon, the Shurmer Golf Day and many more!!🚶🏻‍♀️⛰️🏃⛳️🌳

We would also love for any of our friends & family to join in on a month that interests them. The more the merrier - just speak to myself, Andy or Justin for further details.

We’ve set ourselves a target of £12,000, aiming for £1,000 a month! Dad will also be taking part in events where he’s able to 🥰

We’re kick starting the year with the following events, the other months will be confirmed shortly once booked in!

January - 1/2 Marathon London Walk ❄️

February - Pen y Fan Mountain Trek ⛰️

March - Henley River 10K 🏃

We really want to turn this life changing event into something positive and channel our energy into help making a difference. Any donation you can make will go a long way and like it has done for our Dad, save many more lives!

Thank you so much and here’s to the fundraiser taking place from January 2024 - The Shurmer Siblings are out to smash it 💥
