Story
Just over a year on from our inaugural marathon Harefield Walk, when friends and family came together to walk along the Thames from Tower Bridge to Hampton Court Palace and raised £29,018.02 for the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity, WE ARE BACK to take on a new challenge and raise even more money for this brilliant charity!
On 3rd May 2026, we will be walking a half marathon along the Thames from Staines to Hampton Court Palace.
After living with Arrhythmic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) for over 25 years and ultimately entering intractable heart failure, I was lucky enough to be the recipient of a new heart in October 2024. What was a hugely difficult time for me was made bearable by the wonderful team at The Harefield Hospital who looked after me for months whilst I waited for and recovered from my heart transplant. They will continue to care for me and many others with follow-ups for the rest of my life.
The money we raised back in April 2025 went towards an amazing project at the hospital called The ITU Sunshine Therapy Terrace. This space enables patients to enjoy the outdoors whilst still receiving life-saving treatment. Some of the darkest days of my transplant journey were whilst I was in ITU and the opportunity to go outside would have been amazing. The fantastic contribution from our group of walkers allowed the charity to complete Phase 1 of the project and we now hope to contribute towards the second and final phase. Phase 1 included installation of medical gas points to provide patients on life-support devices like ventilators and ECMO a rare chance to spend time outdoors with their families, connect with nature and escape the stress and noise of the ward. Phase 2 will include improvements to the wider space, driveway and paths to reduce the amount of dust, which is hugely important for all patients.
I am so touched that so many of my friends and family are willing to walk again and show their support for this wonderful hospital and all those waiting for heart and lung transplants. Thank you in advance for any donations you feel you would like to make.
