Save it or Shave it? · 21 October 2024

We help the babies, children and young people treated at Scotland's largest children's hospital, the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow. We fund medical equipment, research, play programmes and family support services to ensure that our young patients receive the best possible care and experience.

Story

Save it or shave it?

After 27 years of having my hair braided and then in dreadlocks the time has come to get a new haircut … or not!

For those that don’t know why I have had my hair styled like this for so long then we have to go back to October 21st, 1993, when I was diagnosed as having Leukaemia.

I spent two years in and out of Yorkhill Hospital for Sick Children (now Glasgow Children’s Hospital) receiving treatment against this form of cancer. After 2 years of treatment, I was in remission and have thankfully stayed there since.

As my hair began to fall out due to the chemotherapy, I said to myself that when it grew back in that I would get some kind of crazy hair style to remember how lucky I was to survive with many people not being so lucky.

The first hair style to grab my attention was dreadlocks. I went for braids at first, but they eventually morphed into dreads about four years later.

I wanted to do this last year to mark 30 years since I was diagnosed but my sister-in-law was in a bad way with her treatment against cancer, so I decided not to do it then.

She’s still receiving treatment, but she’s had really great results the past few months and things are looking good for her now. Long may that last!

I had the idea a long time ago that if I ever thought about getting rid of my dreads then I would try raise some funds for the hospital that helped me all those years ago.

The fundraising idea is to either save my dreads or shave them off!

When you donate, please state either “save” or “shave” in the leave a message section and after the deadline passes (21.10.2024) the one with the most votes wins and the dreads will either be saved or shaved.

In the event of a draw, how much each side raised will be used as the deciding factor, hopefully that won’t be tied as well!

The choice is yours!

If you can, please give generously for a great cause.
