Simon and Paul's Marathon du Médoc

Simon Hughes is raising money for HOPE for Epilepsy

Marathon du Médoc · 6 September 2025

HOPE for Epilepsy run a monthly support group, host an information and advice helpline, organise and fund family days out and provide anti-suffocation pillows free of charge to children and young people who have nocturnal convulsive seizures.

Story

The idea of running a marathon in discussion fuelled by red wine may seem an unlikely way to kickstart a sporting endeavour. However, it has become reality, as Simon and Paul head to Bordeaux for the 2025 Marathon du Médoc on 6 September.

We are both running to raise much needed funds for HOPE for Epilepsy - a small charity dedicated to supporting and connecting families with children that have been affected by epilepsy. Simon's son, Cameron, had his first seizure when he was 3 years old. A traumatic experience, which marked the start of a long and unplanned journey navigating hospitalisations, specialists, anti-seizure medications and the onset of multiple complex conditions including learning disabilities, ADHD and ASD.

HOPE for Epilepsy provided a lifeline. The isolation Simon and his wife Sarah could have felt as parents was reduced as they could meet with people in similar situations, and where they could chat on a level with mutual understanding. The presence of hugely experienced epilepsy nurses at the sessions also provided very welcome, and objective ‘second opinions’ on the advice and decisions made by specialists and consultants. And Cameron (and Mum and Dad!) still benefit from his anti-suffocation pillow and alarm, helping everyone sleep at night (most of the time!).

HOPE for Epilepsy does not get government funding and is run entirely by volunteers who work for FREE! So 100% of funds flows through to benefit children and families.

So please give what you can - every penny pledged will drive us on!

Peace and love,

Simon & Paul
