Oxford Half Marathon 2023 · 15 October 2023 ·

Local GP Dr. Martin Lawrence's dying wish was that patients in his practice should be able to die at home; his work was made reality through the work of District Nurse Jane Phillips MBE. The service has grown and now provides free hospice at home care covering five GP practices in Oxfordshire.

Story

On Sunday 15th October, I’m running the Oxford Half Marathon. My training has been going well. I’ve stuck to my plan (mainly) and even frequented the gym a number of times. I’ve been sleeping and eating well, cut out the booze, all in the hope to run a personal best. The all-illusive sub 1hr and 50 mins remains the target.

I write to you, not really to tell you about my run but something way more significant. Recently, I’ve seen firsthand the devastation that a diagnosis of cancer can have for an individual, and their family. A friend, Pete Cubbage, who had just celebrated his 60th birthday found out a few weeks ago that he’d been diagnosed with Glioblastoma, a lethal brain tumour and given a short time to live. During this difficult time a charity called The Lawrence Home Nursing Team are providing specialist end of life support to Pete and much needed respite care to his family, enabling him to remain at home with care, reassurance and self-respect.

The last time I ran the Oxford half was with Pete (see photo) and it feels fitting that I don’t just run for my own personal goal but raise awareness and money for this wonderful charity which is supporting Pete.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you for donating.
