Imagine your newborn baby needing specialist care at birth. Instead of those very special days getting to know your baby as a family, you’re catapulted into an unfamiliar world of incubators, wires, medical tests and interventions. While your baby has specialist treatment, we provide emotional and practical support to help you through the trauma & upheaval. We’re there to help families cope, and provide state-of-the-art medical equipment and nursing expertise that could save babies lives.

Help Us Complete Our Chair Appeal for the Neonatal Unit

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters, SSNAP has already funded half of the specialist recliner chairs needed for the Neonatal Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Now, we're asking for your help to fund the remaining 15 chairs—so that every baby cot space is equipped with one.

We're aiming to raise £34,880.90 to purchase these high-quality, height-adjustable recliner chairs. These aren’t just any chairs—they're a vital part of best practice in family-centred neonatal care. Specially chosen for their comfort and flexibility, they allow parents to spend longer, more relaxed periods holding, bonding, and breastfeeding their newborns. These simple yet powerful moments of skin-to-skin contact and closeness are known to have significant, positive impacts on a baby's development.

SSNAP (Support for the Sick Newborn and their Parents) has been there for families since 1982, supporting the John Radcliffe Hospital’s Neonatal Unit—a Level 3 Centre that cares for up to 56 of the most premature and critically ill babies from across the Thames Valley. We provide emotional, medical, financial, and practical support to families and the NHS teams who care for their babies.

With your support, we can ensure that every family, at every cot, has the comfort and dignity they deserve during the most challenging days of their lives.

👉 Please donate today and help us reach our target. Your gift will directly fund these essential chairs, and make a real difference to parents and their newborns.

From all of us at SSNAP—thank you.

The one thing that got us through the tough days of many, many hours on the ward with Isabella was being able to sit in the specialist recliner chair provided by the hospital and holding our girl close to our hearts ‘skin to skin’. Kangaroo care is one of the most important practices within the NICU. However! There are not enough of these chairs in the unit for all the parents to enjoy their baby’s and help them get through the tough days with the essential comfort they provided.

After personally spending every waking hour in this chair, I cannot begin to explain how important the skin to skin comfort has helped George and I to cope with the hardest few months of our lives. This has also, without a shadow of a doubt helped Isabella. I have seen it with my own eyes. She calms down, her heart rate lowers, her oxygen requirement lowers and she has a very restful sleep, helping her to grow and build her much needed strength to continue fighting.
