Michael's fundraiser for Alzheimer's Society

Six and Sixty · 26 April 2025
As I near my sixtieth birthday, I’ve set myself a new challenge: six races, covering over 150 miles and climbing around 12,000 feet—all to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. This incredible charity provides essential support to those affected by dementia and invests in life-changing research. It’s a cause close to my heart, and I’m dedicating this effort to the memory of my mother, Josephine Mary Weaver, who was a constant source of support to both me and my brother Paul. Marking this milestone year with a meaningful and positive goal is something I’m truly proud of.
Here’s what’s ahead:
Magna Carta Spring Marathon, Saturday 26 April
A scenic marathon along the Thames Path near Runnymede, where runners follow the river through peaceful meadows, ancient woodlands, and historic landmarks. This stretch of the Thames is known for its wide, tranquil waters and views of Windsor Castle, and it’s famously the site where the Magna Carta was sealed in 1215. With a flat, well-maintained trail and a backdrop of royal parks, historic bridges, and wildlife-filled wetlands, it’s a route full of both natural beauty and historical significance.
Three Castles 50km Ultra Challenge, Saturday 31 May
A 50km ultra along the River Medway, starting in historic Rochester and finishing at Tonbridge athletics track. The route passes three medieval castles and winds through a mix of charming villages and countryside, including Burham, Aylesford, Maidstone, East Farleigh, Wateringbury, and Yalding. Highlights include Aylesford Priory, Maidstone’s riverside paths, and a final stretch past Tonbridge Castle before a well-earned victory lap.
Gower Peninsula 50km Ultra Challenge, Saturday 19 July and Sunday 20 July
Two consecutive 50km ultras exploring the stunning Gower Peninsula, the UK’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The route takes in sweeping cliff-top paths, remote coves, golden sandy beaches, and rolling headlands, with highlights including Rhossili Bay, Worm’s Head, and the dramatic limestone cliffs of South Gower. The terrain is challenging but rewarding, offering breathtaking coastal views and a true taste of wild, unspoiled Wales.
Vanguard Way Marathon, Sunday 3 August
A scenic marathon route that winds through the Surrey countryside into Greater London, with over 2,300 feet of climbing and a varied mix of terrain. Runners will pass through tranquil villages like Woldingham and Limpsfield, wooded trails in the North Downs, and open farmland with wide views across the Weald. The route follows parts of the Vanguard Way, a long-distance path linking the countryside to the capital, offering a mix of peaceful green spaces, steady climbs, and rewarding descents.
Bath Two Tunnels Railway Races, Sunday 17 August
A marathon in and around the historic city of Bath, combining scenic countryside with unique urban features. The route takes runners along the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath, through quiet green spaces and past Georgian architecture, before entering the Two Tunnels Greenway featuring the mile-long Combe Down Tunnel, the longest pedestrian tunnel in the UK. Along the way, the course passes through villages like Midford and Monkton Combe, offering a mix of riverside trails, wooded valleys, and gentle hills, all set against the backdrop of Bath’s stunning UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
Total Distance: 154.6 miles
Total Ascent: approximately 12,000 feet
Turning sixty hasn’t slowed me down and with your support, every mile I run helps the Alzheimer’s Society continue its vital work. Thank you for your donation, it really does make a difference.
