Story

Thank you so much for visiting my JustGiving page 💙

I can’t quite believe I’m saying this… but I’m running the London Marathon!

I am incredibly honoured to be running in support of Dementia UK, a cause that means more to my family than I can put into words.

In 2024, we heartbreakingly lost both our beloved Grandad to dementia and our wonderful Granny too. Watching someone so strong, active and full of life slowly lose pieces of themselves is something no family is ever prepared for.

In the early days after his diagnosis, Grandad was confused and frustrated. Everyday tasks that once came so easily suddenly felt overwhelming. He and his wife of 61 years, our wonderful Granny Peggy, struggled to come to terms with what was happening. The isolation they felt was heart breaking.

We reached out for support through the NHS, but the help available was limited. Appointments were brief. Medication was adjusted. But nothing could truly support them emotionally as their familiar life began to slip away.

One of the hardest moments was when Grandad lost his driving licence. To many, that might seem small — but to him it meant losing his independence, his routine, and his ability to look after Granny. For a man who was still swimming regularly and walking daily well into his 80s, it was devastating.

As his condition worsened, even his beloved short walks “around the block” became unsafe. As a family, we made the decision to fund a private carer to keep him safe at home. We were fortunate that we could afford this — but so many families cannot.

Eventually, we had to make the most heartbreaking decision of all: moving Grandad into a specialist care home. It was a decision made out of love, but without the professional guidance and support we so desperately needed.

This is why I’m running.

Admiral Nurses, supported by Dementia UK, provide specialist dementia support to families — offering practical advice, emotional reassurance, and expert guidance when it’s needed most. Sadly, Admiral Nurses weren’t available in our area when we needed them.

I’m running 26.2 miles in the hope that more families won’t have to navigate dementia alone.

Over the past year, as a family, we’ve poured so much time, energy and love into raising money for Dementia UK — determined to turn our grief into something positive and to help other families facing the same devastating journey.

This challenge is my personal contribution to that mission.

Every mile, every step, and every donation is for them — and for the families who need support when they need it most.

If you’re able to donate — no matter how big or small — you’ll be helping to fund more Admiral Nurses and give families the support they truly deserve.

Thank you for reading and supporting us 💙
