Story
On the anniversary of the ULT Rowtorious Lassies World Record 24 and 26 hour row, another ten lassies took on the Ski Erg 100K to beat or match a younger mixed team record!
Again, led by our number one Warrior, Annie Atkins, we gave ourselves a handicap since four of our ten-strong team are above the 40-49 age category we were competing in. Giving a new meaning to the Atkins Diet, Annie led the newly formed Ski Sirens (AI helped us with the name - we’re that cool!) with a gruelling regime of ski, strength and endurance training at ULT Fitness and CrossFit gym, where the majority are members. Pictured here in our ‘before pose’ on the day, are Ann Atkins, Candice Christie, Clare Holland, Evey Prentice, Geraldine Hunter, Hils Macken, Kathryn Chalmers, Lorna McEwan, Lyndsey Lamont and Maria Coughtrie. You’ll see us, pictured in our updates, with a supper or ice-cream, a strange diet for fitness queens and not a staple diet, but it fits in with the Ayrshire Hospice Summer Super (Supper) Draw, since Ayrshire Hospice are their chosen charity for this challenge.
The charity is dear to the hearts of this collective as Annie has her own battle with cancer, having survived stage four bowel cancer two years ago, training hard throughout chemo to take last year’s rowing World Record, and win the Driathlon in her age category. She knows how to put the CAN into Cancer!
We all have our personal journey with cancer, be it ours or someone we love or have loved, and Ayrshire Hospice support people in all stages, however they have been touched, even in bereavement counselling for those affected regardless of if they have been a patient at the hospice. A £10 donation can buy a fish supper for a family member to enjoy with their loved one on their private patio, followed by ice-cream. We certainly earned our suppers with the ski challenge, which took place at 11am on 13 July at ULT.
