Skye's fundraiser for UK Sepsis Trust

Skye Owen is raising money for UK Sepsis Trust

Walking the entire South West Coast Path in one go - 630 Miles · 1 April 2026

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.

Story

In April 2026, I’ll be setting out on a 630-mile solo walk along the entire South West Coast Path -from Minehead in Somerset, all the way to Poole in Dorset - to raise awareness and funds for Sepsis UK, a charity that’s incredibly close to my heart. The elevation along this route is equivalent to climbing Mount Everest four times. I estimate this will take over 2 months to complete, and I’ll be doing it in one go!

In September 2024, my life changed forever. I became seriously ill with sepsis, a condition I had barely heard of before it nearly took my life. What started as severe pain turned into a terrifying, life-threatening infection. Doctors initially told me nothing was wrong and tried to send me home. If I had gone, I wouldn’t be here today.

After many days of uncertainty, I was finally diagnosed with septic arthritis in my hip and sacroiliac joint. I underwent emergency surgery and weeks of IV antibiotics. My recovery was long and painful - I had to relearn how to walk, I’ve also been left with permanent nerve damage and limited range of movement in my leg, and chronic pain in my back. But I survived. I want to use my second chance to help others.

Sepsis can affect anyone, at any age, at any time. Awareness saves lives, and recovery support changes them. That’s why I’m walking the entire 630-mile South West Coast Path: to raise awareness, raise funds, and share stories from other survivors and families affected by sepsis.

Along the way, I’ll be inviting other sepsis survivors and those who’ve lost loved ones to join me for parts of the walk - to share their stories, offer strength, and raise as much awareness as I can. I’ll be recording and sharing the stories of those who are comfortable with it, so the world can see the devastation sepsis causes. They will also see the strength, determination, and inspiration from survivors.

I’ll be doing the walk solo. There’s no time goal - just one mission: to make it to the end, and make a difference.

Every donation helps Sepsis UK continue their vital work: supporting survivors, families, and spreading life-saving knowledge about the signs of sepsis.

If my story moves you, please donate - even a small amount can help save lives. And if you or someone you know has been affected by sepsis, I’d love to walk with you. Together, we can make sure no one faces this battle alone!

I am unbelievably excited, but also terrified. I don’t know how my back or leg will hold out during the walk but I can promise you this: I WILL make it to that finish line.
