On the 24th November 2024, age 21, my dearest friend George passed away from an aggressive terminal brain cancer. My uncle, Ed Cox, also has a Glioblastoma.
Through George I discovered my love for shooting, picking up a rifle for the first time the day we met in a small school range. Throughout school we were joined at the hip. Our shooting would have come on much better if we did half as much practicing as we did chatting. Normally we achieved a promising 10 rounds per 2hr sport sessions twice a week.
Our friendship built the foundations which lead to the establishment of the Loughborough University Rifle Club in 2024, where we both hoped students would meet and find a sport and community they thrived in as George and I did (we were both shocking at any other form of physical activity). Looking around the team and the people I have gone on to meet, we would both agree this was a huge success, not just at Loughborough, but also in bringing university clubs together for hosted matches.
In 2020 my Uncle fell from his bike, which clumsy as he was, was not a good sign for someone who has more bike miles than driving miles in his lifetime. Ed was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma, an extremely aggressive terminal brain cancer. Uncle Ed is a keen shooter and following his prognosis I acquired my licenses should he leave behind our family shotguns. I began shooting to support my friend and uncle, never expecting to for it to grow into what it has with nearly as many people I've had the pleasure of meeting.
Following his brain surgery and chemo, Ed was into remission. Naturally he then decided to get back on his bike to cycle from his home in Louth to Hull hospital where he had undergone his surgery.... and back. Ed then went on to raise over £12,000 cycling Lands end to John O'Groats for The Brain Tumour Research Charity.
I, however, am significantly less fit and athletic. I enjoy the lying down aspect of .22 prone shooting. Therefore I am hosting a charity lying down sport at Appleton Shooting Range - 31st May 2026 - with 100% of entries going toward brain tumour research. All abilities are invited, students to seasoned shooters! Hitting the middle is not a requirement but the paper sheet is preferred. Non shooters who wish to come watch an expensive alternative to a £4.99 amazon hole puncher are also welcomed. For those who do not wish to trek to a random out of use, but beautiful quarry in Warrington (WA4 5JD), donations are greatly appreciated.
Love Always, Hols xxx
