William Henry Quilliam, a local Liverpool solicitor embraced Islam in 1887 (aged 31). He took the name Abdullah and claimed that he was the first native Englishman to embrace Islam. He opened the First Mosque in England by inviting the local poor people to a feast. You will be joining the tradition started by Abdullah Quilliam, the ‘Sheikh ul Islam of the British Isles’ a title conferred by the Ottoman Emperor Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Executive Summary

The Quilliam Snowdonia Challenge is a community-driven fundraising and heritage initiative celebrating Abdullah Quilliam, founder of Britain’s first mosque (est. 1887, Liverpool). Led by Akke Rahman, participants will ascend Mount Snowdon to raise £10,000+ for restoring the historic Liverpool Mosque. This initiative will engage diverse participants—families, youth, professionals, faith leaders—in promoting heritage, well-being, and representation.

About Abdullah Quilliam

Abdullah Quilliam (1856–1932), originally William Henry Quilliam, embraced Islam after a trip to Morocco and significantly impacted British society:

• Established Britain’s first mosque (Liverpool Muslim Institute)

• Founded the UK's first Muslim school, library, welfare services

• Published influential Islamic journals: The Crescent and The Islamic World

Our mission is to support the trustees in preserving Quilliam’s legacy through education, heritage preservation, and interfaith dialogue. This challenge supports our vision to restore and revitalise Britain’s oldest mosque as a dynamic cultural centre for British Muslims.
