Phil Griffin's Snowdonia Trek for Heart Care Healthy Living

Phil Griffin is raising money for Heart Care (Walsall & Streetly)

Snowdonia Trek · 1 July 2026

Heart Care is a small much loved local charity that provides rehabilitation to people suffering from heart and lung diseases. Heart Care provides free 3 and 2 month tailored programmes and then long term Aftercare indefinitely. These programmes consist of monitored exercise in our lovely purpose built gym, expert advice on diet & nutrition, lifestyle advice and emotional help through relaxation classes and counselling sessions. We help around 1000 people a year, many of whom are older in their 60's,70's, 80's and beyond. The areas that we serve (Walsall and the surrounding area) are socially deprived and this often leads to higher rates of ill health including heart disease. Put simply Heart Care is helping save and improve older vulnerable people’s lives in our community. Our staff are made up of nurses, exercise physiologists, health care assistants and a part time doctor who all ensure that patients have the very best chance of recovery from their health conditions. Patients (and their families) are often frightened and traumatised when they come to us. Our staff are professional, friendly and work hard at making patients feel comfortable and showing them that they can get their lives back on track again and return to a normal active life with their confidence restored.

Story

1,085 Metres for Every Heartbeat: The Yr Wyddfa Summit Challenge

The Mission

On 1st July 2026, I Phil Griffin, Heart Care Chair of Trustees will be trading the boardroom for the mountain trails. Alongside Suzanne Ursell the Manager of Walsall Heart Care and a dedicated team of volunteers, we are trekking to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the highest point in Wales, to stand 1,085 metres above sea level.

We’ll be setting off early in the morning (around 9am), aiming to reach the summit by lunchtime — a place often described as “nearer to heaven” — before descending and returning to the car park later in the afternoon. We’re all training hard and are excited to take on this challenge together.

We aren't just climbing for the view; we are climbing for the thousands of people in Walsall who face an uphill battle with their heart health every single day.

Why Walsall Heart Care Needs You

For years, Walsall Heart Care has been a lifeline for our community. We provide specialised, structured rehabilitation for those recovering and managing:

Heart Attacks

Major Cardiac Surgery

Serious Heart Conditions

Lung disease

Cancer

Whilst we work closely with the NHS, we are an independent charity. To keep our doors open and our equipment up to date, we rely heavily on fundraising and the incredible generosity of people like you.

The Goal:

Our target is £10,000, which will go directly toward the purchase of two new vital pieces of equipment:-

A New ECG (Electrocardiograph) Machine: These machines are used when a patient experiences any chest pain or seems unwell. It allows staff to gain more info by checking their heart health & activity as it efficiently diagnoses irregularities and heart conditions like arrhythmias.

A Professional Upright Exercise Bike: Funds raised will also go toward a high-spec upright bike for our rehab gym. These machines allow our patients to build cardiovascular strength in a controlled, safe environment.

"Every step we take up that mountain represents a step toward recovery for a patients in Walsall."
