Story
The Deptford Ragged Trust, the charitable trust of The Bear Church, offers a place of refuge, learning, worship and community to local people in South East London.
We are continuing the work of one of London’s first ragged schools started by eight Christian men and women in 1844. The legacy is about creating community and addressing the impact of poverty on people's lives.
Our innovative building redevelopment, The Ragged Project, will deliver a community hub and socially affordable, supported housing for young people.
My Journey with The Bear Church
I’ve been attending The Bear Church for five years. I was searching for a new church closer to home and in the winter of 2020, my children and I began joining the services online. Right from the start, I was struck by how creative and engaging it was. The services at The Bear helped us explore our relationship with God in imaginative ways. As someone who appreciates a neurodiverse-friendly environment, I found it incredibly refreshing. The messages really stay with me, and I feel able to apply what we learn each week in practical, meaningful ways.
I met many of the church members in person for the first time at a church camping event the following year. It was funny seeing how different everyone looked compared to how I’d imagined them online - especially their height! But what stood out the most was how kind and welcoming everyone was.
What I love most about The Bear is its deep commitment to community and outreach. It’s not just about what happens on Sundays, it’s about being the hands and feet of Jesus throughout the week. Whether through the soup kitchen, English Fridays, Bear Cubs, or other activities, The Bear provides essential, free social and practical spaces for people in our local area—regardless of their background or beliefs. This kind of care is so important in today’s world, where isolation and financial hardship are on the rise.
Over the years, I’ve built real relationships at The Bear. It’s a place where I truly feel I have permission to be myself, not fit into a box. I feel accepted and loved by God and by His people at The Bear.
A group of us will be climbing Mount Snowdon together. It’s going to be an adventure full of fun, friendship, and fitness, but most importantly, we’re doing it to raise money for a great cause. I’m excited to be part of something that brings people together while giving back to the community that has given me so much.
Please give whatever you are able—whether that’s encouragement, financial donations, or simply your support. Every bit helps!
We’re always keen to grow our church family, so if you’re curious, why not visit us one Sunday? We’d love to welcome you and show you what we’re all about.
All are welcome!
