Story
Hi, my name is Sofie Chandra, from Singapore. On 10 Apr 2026, my husband Eugene Lim passed away from complications of his Stage 4 Urothelial Cell Cancer in the left lining of the kidney with spread to other parts. He was larger than life itself, a runner and more importantly a community leader.
He championed and led local run communities including being the adidas Runners Singapore captain for 8 years. He founded a local run crew, The High Panters- Singapore's longest running run crew of 14 years where our focus is to raise awareness and funds for the less privileged, with much highlight in supporting women.
Eug also was my main pillar when I started Singapore's first all female run crew- Happy Pace Club 4 years ago, with the intention to create a safe space for women to come together to run, form bonds and friendships and a support network.
A few years ago, i had found out about the Serengeti Girls Run and thought it would be an interesting run to go for, but it never crossed my mind again due to the high commitment costs for the donation. During the course of the past 13 weeks, since Eugene left this world, the run came back to me one day and i felt a very strong calling to it. I would like to think that this is part of my personal grief journey, in memory of Eug and to give back where i can.
We had travelled to South Africa pre-covid and had always wanted to return. This is my time now to return, on behalf of Eug and to take on this challenge of running 21km per day over 3 days. It is "more than a run, an invitation to connect deeply with the landscape, its people and a future being shaped one woman at a time."
I will need to raise USD17,000 that will be funds for girls' empowerment programmes in rural Tanzania. Details of the initiatives here:
