Wasps Cycle Club Ride for WLCF Mental Health Support programme · 4 June 2023

The Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation was set up in 2012 with the aim to raise funds to support a charitable project each year that is close to the heart of the Wasps Legends teams. Wasps Legends are former players who participate in a number of activities with the sole aim of raising funds.

Story

Wasps Cycle Club will join Cirencester based Reptiles Cycle Club to cycle over 2,800km on Saturday the 1st July to raise funds for Wasps Legends Charitable Foundation who are teaming up with Wasps FC to introduce a programme that will support mental health and wellbeing within our rugby community. We are collaborating with Brave Minds who will work with us to train 10 mental health champions, offering on going support, workshops and training

A study by the UK rugby health project at Durham University has shown that rugby players are more likely to have mental health issues in retirement than athletes in non-contact sports, and that those who suffered multiple concussions during their playing career are at even greater risk of depression, anxiety, sleep and anger issues.

It is estimated that one in four people will experience a mental health illness each year in the UK. This is not OK, and people suffering need to know that they’re not alone, and that they can seek help.
