Story
Hello Hello!
Please join me in giving a cheer to adults and children with learning disabilities as I challenge myself to my first triathlon!
Finding creative and engaging ways to assess the eye health and vision of children at Special schools in Brent, Harrow and Hillingdon in North West London has become more than a vocation for me.
However, SeeAbility is a national charity that has made it its mission to support the more than one million people with learning disabilities in the UK.
It's really important we keep on fighting for their right to good eye care.
Children with learning disabilities are 28 times more likely to likely to have serious sight problems, whilst adults with learning disabilities are 10 times more likely.
For some children and adults, especially those with disabilities, having a routine eye test can be extremely challenging.
Every clinic I meet some of the most incredible humans who despite their learning disabilities find ways to adapt to their world.
As 80% of our learning comes from our vision, its vital to ensure that vision problems are corrected. This can make a difference to even enabling a child to develop the skills to walk and to communicate!
However, thousands of children with disabilities across the country are missing out on the eye care they need. Over four in ten pupils we have seen had no history of eye tests or eye care, and yet half of the children have a problem with their eyes or vision, and at least a third need glasses.
For me it's more than work, its more than addressing an inequalities for me its about a human right, its about humanity.
Personally, completing this challenge has shifted my confidence completely, fired up my motivation and positive mental attitude.
Your support would mean a lot to me as I swim, "run" and cycle through the very areas I work with SeeAbility.
