Sophie’s Chance to Shine

Wendy Goode is raising money for Chance to Shine
In memory of Sophie Goode
We work in state schools and under-served communities to deliver best-in-class cricket programmes to young people aged 5 to 24. We want them to learn a love of the game and to find a sense of belonging through the sport, developing their wider wellbeing and life skills to help fulfil their potential

Story

Sophie loved life, loved music, dancing, sunrises and singing, … and she loved cricket.

From a very young age Saturdays were spent on the boundary, with her brother and sister, watching her parents play. When she turned 15, she was old enough to join in.

Sophie signed for Cottingham Ladies with her Mum in Feb 2020, also playing the occasional game for Market Rasen Ladies, and Hull Ionians Coal Exporters 2nd XI.

As she grew older (and so much taller) she developed into a great bowler, winning bowler of the year for Cottingham ladies in 2022. Moving to Kirkella Ladies in 2023, Sophie also opened the bowling for Cottingham 4s mixed IX, winning the Stan Furlong Memorial Trophy in 2023 (Cottingham 4’s player of the year).

She went on the win best bowler for North Cave Coal Exporters Midweek IX in 2024.

Sophie also made a massive impact both on and off the field playing for Thursday League team The Blazers, their Captain said “Her infectious smile and laughter, her amazing cricket ability that often showed up us oldies, made her one in a trillion. She will be greatly missed by our little club.”

Sophie was delighted to make selection for the University of Nottingham Ladies 2nd team and win a Golden (paper!) plate for Indoor bowler 2024! Sadly Sophie never got to play the outdoor format at university as her life was cut short by a tragic accident whilst in her first year.

Whilst it saddens me deeply that we will never see where Sophie’s story would have lead, I can think of no better legacy than to give other children a chance to play a game she loved.
