Story
In my capacity as a journalist, I've done a lot of reporting about violence against women and girls. And in my capacity as someone extremely online, I've been talking a lot on Instagram and TikTok about violence against women and girls.
And as a lesbian approaching middle age, I've long enjoyed cycling absolutely everywhere.
So I'm combining two of my passions - trying to put a stop to violent misogyny and cycling - by heading from Dunkirk, France, up through Belgium up to Amsterdam. It'll involve:
- 340km of travelling
- 13kg of bike
- 13kg of gubbins I will most certainly need with me
- Me
- Many dikes
- A few random campsites
I do not want anyone to feel any pressure to donate, but if you are at all inclined, I think EVAW is a very worthy cause.
EVAW is a leading coalition of 163 specialist women's support services, researchers, activists, victim-survivors and NGOs working to end violence against women and girls in all its forms.
1 in 4 women have been raped or sexually assaulted since the age of 16. A woman is killed by a man in the UK every three days. I know we as a society are completely outraged by this and I also know that EVAW are at the forefront of changing things for the better.
PS I appreciate violence against men is a huge issue - I have no doubt that the work EVAW does also help push towards a society where all men's violence is tackled - keeping everyone safer.
