Sophie’s Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)

Katy Mathewson is raising money for The Boom Foundation
In memory of Sophie Mathewson
In April 2013, The Boom Foundation was set up and it remains the only charity in NI dedicated to supporting patients suffering from sarcoma, a rare form of bone and soft tissue cancer. 50% of funds raised go to Sarcoma UK towards vital research; the rest supports those affected by sarcoma in NI.

Story

The inspiration for “Sophie’s Clinical Nurse Specialist” came from our daughter’s own sarcoma journey.

Sophie (Mathewson) was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, in June 2019, at the age of 16.

Treatment started in July 2019 at the Cancer Centre in Belfast. Her Clinical Nurse Specialist, Susan, was our first point of contact and became an invaluable lifeline for us.

Sophie adored all the nurses that she came into contact with and they became her second family.

Sophie sadly passed away on 16 April 2021. She was a huge inspiration to us all. There can be no better tribute to her memory than providing a legacy through helping other families via this clinical nursing post.
