Story
On Thursday 13th June 2024, our lives were shattered when, out of nowhere, our beloved Michael 'Mickey' Garcia suffered a cardiac arrest and left us forever 4 days later.
Mickey was healthy and young - he had only turned 61 two days earlier. He wasn't overweight, he didn't smoke, nor drink excessively, and he led an active lifestyle. He had no symptoms at all leading up to his cardiac arrest, but heart disease is a cruel, silent killer.
There aren't enough words to describe how losing him has upended our worlds, or the tsunami of grief that we're left with. He was the most loving, kind, generous, smart, wonderful man that you could ever hope to meet. He was an adoring husband to Maeve, the best father to Anna and Issy, a doting son to Frances and the late Len, beloved brother & brother-in-law, amazing uncle, dedicated godfather and incredible friend to so many. We will never recover from losing him so suddenly and unexpectedly, without any warning or the chance say goodbye.
So we're cycling from London to Brighton on 15th June 2025 - Father's Day, and exactly one year on from the week of his passing - to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and help ensure that, one day, no other families will have to go through what we're going through.
The number of people in our team - many of us novice cyclists who have absolutely no business being on a bike! - is testament to what an incredible man he was, and how loved and missed he is.
We are having to learn to live with the fact that nothing can ever bring his physical presence back. But cycling the L2B in his memory will help keep him close, in our forever broken hearts.
We're grateful for whatever you can spare to help the British Heart Foundation achieve a world free from the devastation of heart and circulatory disease. A gift that will keep on living.
We love you forever Mickey xxx
On our cycle, we will also be riding for and remembering many other loved ones that we have lost far too soon to heart disease, including the wonderful Eddie Rogers.
