Story
Father Stuart Owen and Rabbi Neil Janes undertake a pilgrimage walk together from Wallingford to Berkhamsted as the Jewish community celebrates the festival of Sukkot (tabernacles) and the church celebrates its harvest festival. The route of the walk is tied to the fact that the Jewish community was moved from Berkhamsted to Wallingford in 1242, so we're retracing the steps and using it as an opportunity to explore the theme of 'Food for the Soul'.
We want to give thanks for local organisations which enrich the local community. We want to recognise the many different ways in which our humanity is fed, including faith, sports, the arts, politics, healthcare, education and others. Both the Jewish and Christian traditions celebrate harvest festivals in the autumn, the time when we give thanks for the food that nourishes our bodies, and this year we want to combine that celebration with an act of thanksgiving for all those experiences which also nourish our souls.
At this time of harvest and thinking about spiritual nourishment we are also raising money for two charities who provide much needed support for people in need.
The Trussel Trust's vision is for a UK without the need for food banks. They are the national voice working towards a just, compassionate future, where no one should have to use a food bank to get by.
