Story
In 2025 Simon & Gemma took on Coach to 5K. Gemma previously ran but due to injuries hadn’t ran in nearly 8 years, and Simon had never managed to complete C25K before.
We decided doing some running challenges would be fun and raising money for the Thomas Theyer Foundation in the process would be a good idea, making it more worthwhile. So 2026…. The year of challenges!
Challenge one: Complete the Parkrun Alphabet for Thomas.
Challenge two: Chester 10K - Complete (update below)
Challenge three: Buxton Carnival Race
Challenge four: Tissington Trail Half marathon
Maybe some more challenges along the way: soon to be updated!
Let’s see what 2026 brings!
Why Thomas Theyer Foundation:
Our own children all to varying degrees are neurodiverse. The support out there is being squeezed, and it is local charities and support services that can really make a difference and need our support.
Simon:
The foundation is close to my heart and I have always been inspired by Thomas’ love of running and how this helped him, and although it had taken me a long time, I now find myself competing in my first proper 10K, having only started running properly a year ago; time to give something back and it will also help push me in the race and to try and go further, and maybe faster.
Gemma:
Thomas was a beloved member of Buxton AC and when he passed away it was such a loss. Thomas’ family, in his memory, created The Thomas Theyer Foundation. TTFs aim is to promote the physical and mental wellbeing of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and those experiencing Difficult Life Circumstances, and their families. In a world where services for children are being pushed and squeezed, TTFs services are needed more than ever.
UPDATE:
MBNA Chester 10K - done. Simon beat an hour with 59:41, he was hoping for 1hr 5mins!! Gemma got a PB with 54:54! However, since Chester, Gemma is injured.. thanks to physio and a tens machine, we will plod on!
A little bit about The Thomas Theyer Foundation:
The Thomas Theyer Foundation support children and young people with special educational needs and those experiencing difficult life circumstances, their families/carers. TTF recognises the many physical and mental health benefits of exercise and strive to increase access to exercise, in particular outdoor activities. TTF supports young people with mental health support through therapeutic services.
