Walking 90 Miles Back to the Hospital That Saved My Life

Christopher Howard is raising money for NHS Blood and Transplant Trust Fund

Liverpool to Birmingham Charity Walk (90 miles) · 23 September 2026

The NHS Blood and Transplant Charity Fund uses donations from donors, patients and the public to save and improve lives. Donations to our charity can be used to develop new therapies, improve our donation services and undertake groundbreaking research so we can continue to innovate in saving lives.

Story

Two years ago, I received a life-saving liver transplant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Without the incredible generosity of my organ donor and the dedication of the NHS teams who cared for me, I simply wouldn't be here today.

This September, I'll be walking approximately 90 miles from Liverpool back to the very hospital that gave me a second chance at life.

I won't be doing it alone. Five of us will complete the entire journey, with a further three joining us along the way, making eight of us taking part in the challenge in total. For us, that's symbolic of the incredible fact that one organ donor can save up to eight lives.

This challenge is about far more than the miles. It's my way of honoring my donor, thanking the NHS teams who saved my life, and giving something back to the transplant community that has given me so much.

## Where your donation goes

Every donation goes directly to the NHS Blood and Transplant Charity, helping to fund projects such as:

• Family support networks for children and their families affected by transplantation, helping them navigate the challenges of life before and after a transplant.

• Memory boxes that help donor families remember and celebrate the lives of their loved ones.

• Additional emotional support and counselling for donor families.

These are just some of the ways the charity supports people whose lives have been touched by organ donation.

It's also about raising awareness of organ donation. I know what it feels like to wait for the phone call that could save your life because I was once the person waiting.

If this journey encourages even one more conversation about organ donation, inspires one more person to join the Organ Donor Register, or gives hope to just one more family waiting for a life-saving transplant, then every single step will have been worth it.

We're also hoping people will join us for sections of the walk along the way. Whether it's one mile or twenty, every step walked together helps raise awareness. If you'd like to be part of the journey, we'd love to have you with us. (If you're under 18, please make sure you're accompanied by a parent or guardian, or have their permission.)

If you're able to support the fundraiser, no matter how big or small your donation, thank you. Every contribution will help make a real difference to families whose lives have been touched by organ donation.

And if you're unable to donate, simply sharing this page could help it reach someone who can.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story, and thank you for being part of this journey.
