Story

Sophie would have been 10 years old this year, so we are fundraising in her memory.
Sophie Emily Mitchell was born on Monday 14th September 2015, at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, with a double inlet single ventricle heart, pulmonary atresia and transposition of the great arteries. She was a tough cookie and fought hard through seven surgical procedures and even pulled through a period of time on an ECMO heart and lung bypass system. But Sophie was quite small, which made it difficult for her main operation (a Blalock–Taussig shunt) to work. At 5.55pm on Sunday 25th October 2015 Sophie's shunt blocked and she had a cardiac arrest. She was less than a day from being 6 weeks old and had never made it home or out of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). All the staff at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow did such an amazing job and did absolutely everything they possibly could.
Our world was turned upside-down. Just hours before Sophie died she was smiling and had started taking Sarah's milk via a nasogastric tube. We thought she was on the path to growth and recovery.

Little Hearts Matter is a national charity offering support and information to anyone affected by the devastating diagnosis of a single ventricle heart condition, children born with half a working heart. They work to support and raise awareness of the needs of these children and their families.
They send us cards every year that are a kind reminder of our time with Sophie. They support those living with their heart condition and also the bereaved families of heart children like Sophie.
For the 42 days that Sophie was alive, Andrew and I will be doing a fitness challenge of increasing squats and sit-ups.
Please do join us in the challenge too and share our fundraising page.
