The existing peal of six bells at St. John's Church was installed in 1875, with a major overhaul completed in 1992. However, after 150 years of supporting two and a half tons of bell metal and enduring the challenges of the north west coastal climate, these bells and bell frame are in need of significant restoration. Over the past forty years, local bellringers have undertaken various repair works to keep the bells ringing; however, we have now reached a critical point where major work is essential to ensure their safety and continued use.
A recent survey conducted by Taylor’s of Loughborough has recommended options for a complete retune and rehang with new fittings. We are currently obtaining competitive quotes from other foundries to ensure we make informed decisions moving forward. This special project aims to preserve the rich heritage of Lytham’s lifeboat church by ensuring that its bells can continue to ring out for many more years.
2025 marks the 150th anniversary of the installation of these six bells at St. John’s Church in 1875. The church itself was completed in 1849 but only had a single bell for its first 26 years. The significance of St. John’s Church in Lytham cannot be overstated; it stands proudly opposite the famous windmill as a beacon of community spirit.
To undertake this important project, we need to raise approximately £90,000. Every donation counts and will be immensely appreciated! We will also seek grants that often offer match funding; your contributions will help us maximize potential revenue from these opportunities.
Additionally, there will be options for individuals or businesses to sponsor specific parts of this project—such as a new bell wheel or bell rope—with opportunities for inscriptions or plaques in memory of loved ones or anonymity if preferred.
Due to the condition of the old oak frame it is vital that we act swiftly. We are eager to get this project off to a flying start so that we can place orders promptly and commence work on restoring our beloved bells.
